These images are visual examples of pages from renowned typographic designer Edward Fella’s publication: Letters on America. The book works as an enthused collection of Polaroid photography, displaying an astonishing array of vernacular signage, lettering and symbols captured over many years following Ed Fella’s journey across America. The book is a clear indication of Ed Fella’s personal fascination with typography and documents his way of researching, observing and recording his inspirations as a typographic designer. Amongst his diverse record of extreme close up shots of existing typography, Fella has included in his publication many examples of his own hand drawn alphabets. The purpose of this is to produce unmistakable links between his observational Polaroid photographs and his unique hand rendered designs. This enables the audience to recognise the way in which Ed Fella utilises these discoveries within his own works and gives us an insight into Ed Fella’s key influences, giving us greater understanding of the artist and the basis from which his work evolves. The publication targets people who share the same passion and enthusiasm for the world of typography and its use in modern society, and works as a fantastic resource for any keen typographer, photographer, designer or art director looking for inspiration. The book also appeals to people who are familiar with the hand renderings of Ed Fella as they appear interspersed amongst the masses of Polaroid photographs.
