Notions of Originality

This image is advertising a new season of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.  The image is clearly identifiable as a photographic representation of Edward Hopper’s 1942 Nighthawks Oil on Canvas. The advertising agency responsible for this piece has placed the cast of CSI in an identical fluorescently lit diner with the same level of exposure as the people in Hopper’s original oil painting. The harsh lighting and glass exterior draws attention to the cast inside the diner, exposing them and making them seem completely vulnerable. Hopper’s painting portrays a bleak and secluded outlook on big city life and by recreating this image photographically the advert may be exposing an urban loneliness in the streets of Los Angeles which can be seen in the distance behind the harshly lit diner. Perhaps this is an indication of what to expect in the new season, the advert is perhaps setting the scene for a series of dark and foreboding crimes which will take place in these ominous surroundings. The advertisement is aimed towards people with an interest in American crime dramas or people who have become accustomed to watching previous series of the show; it informs people of the new season in an attempt to persuade them to take the time to tune in.
