My favourite expert in the field of graphic design is Stefan Sagmeister. Sagmeister has said that “My goal for the rest of my life is to touch someone’s heart with design” and if this is the case then he has succeeded in my eyes as in the past I have found the source of inspiration for much of my work in his innovative and refreshing designs. My favourite published book by Sagmeister is entitled Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far which he produced during an experimental year for which he took time away from commercial projects. Sagmeister prefers to work on concepts that are not tied down by deadlines as it enables him to work more freely and his work is not limited by time constrains. The book contains a series of beautiful hand rendered maxims produced in an array of unorthodox forms around the world. An example of this is shown above where he created the word ‘limits’ by floating plastic piping on the surface of a swimming pool in Arizona which amongst other distinctive handmade lettering produces the maxim ‘Trying to look good limits my life’. I even found the format of the laser cut slipcase which reveals the multiple designs of the book covers to be particularly inspiring. I love the way in which Sagmeister’s work is a juxtaposition of art and graphic design and I also love the unique handmade qualities of his work.
