The images above are examples of the witty Violent Veg and Vivacious Veg creations of Brandmaster (now part of the Carte Blanche Group). The Violent Veg brand is one of the most popular amongst the humorous greetings card and gift industry and this is down to their ability to create hilarity through the medium of vegetables. The greetings cards and gifts are targeted towards anyone with a sense of humour, the Violent Veg brand was where it all originated from, however the Carte Blanche Group identified the need for gags of a more feminine and less violent kind to target the female members of its audience and that lead to the birth of the upcoming Vivacious Veg brand. The idea of vegetables alone is most definitely not one linked with humour, however by approaching them with a fresh perspective the three entrepreneurs at Brandmaster have creatively transformed fresh fruit and veg into lovable rogues using modelling clay, baked clay and copper wire. They have then placed these aggressive vegetable characters into various comical situations and made associations with things that are dissimilar to create humour in the captions. For example in the first image they have used a play on words to establish a connection between a Swede and Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street aka Swedey Todd and in the second image associations have been made between the characteristics of the fruit and veg varieties for example a kiwi fruit is seedy because it contains seeds, and the fact that the word seedy can also describe sleazy and sordid behaviour. The inspiration for the gags derives from anything including overheard conversations to writing the weekly shopping list, the creative writers and artists are in control of the entire gag, from the preliminary ideas and sketches, to the building of the set and the photography; this enables the team to quickly respond to topical issues.
