Digital Storytelling

The X Factor is an example of a show which successfully utilises multiple platforms to engage its audience. The X Factor main show is followed by The Xtra Factor, a spinoff show which displays all the backstage happenings during the main show, it gives the audience unique insights through interviews with the contestants and shows their emotional responses concerning the comments from the judges and how they feel their performance went. There have been many follow on shows in the past including The Xtra Factor the Aftermath and The Xtra Factor Access all Areas but these shows were axed after series three down to ITV2 cutbacks. The Winners Story is shown every year, a special documentary which follows the winner after the final, leading up to whether they have achieved the notorious Christmas number one spot. The X Factor website provides its audience with all the latest X Factor news and hot gossip. It has many online exclusives including the low down on the judges and exclusive interviews with contestants. There are plenty of videos that the audience can tune into including highlights from the main show and behind the scenes footage. There is also a place for fans to leave their own comments or alternatively the show is available to follow on applications such as Facebook and Twitter. A weekly publication called X Mag was released this year with similar insights into the show and The X Factor annual is now available for purchase. Also people at home can enjoy the complete X Factor experience with a range of X Factor games for XBOX, PS3 and Nintendo WII complete with microphones so that everyone can have a go at impressing the judges.
